Patricia Dagorn was described as a “perverse narcissist” who was “venal and unscrupulous” in the Nice court where she was accused of killing two men she had seduced, and poisoning two others “with premeditation”. Dagorn, 57, had denied the charge. Her legal team said there was a “cruel absence” of evidence to convict her. Prosecutors told the court that Dagorn, a divorced law graduate, met at least 20 men in the Côte d’Azur in 2011 and 2012 mostly via a matchmaking agency, but also through small ads online and by approaching elderly men in the street. Before the trial, Nice prosecutor Jean-Michel Prêtre said: “She would be full ofempathy for these men, would gain their con

Pope Francis weds couple on papal plane

Pope Francis weds couple on papal plane Pope Francis celebrated the first-ever airborne papal wedding on Thursday, marrying two flight attendants from Chile's flagship airline at 36,000 feet during a flight from Santiago. Bride Paula Podest, 39, and groom Carlos Ciuffardi, 41, said "I do" after telling Francis that they had been married in a civil service in 2010 but had been unable to follow up with a church ceremony because of the Feb. 27, 2010, earthquake that rocked  Chile. Francis then offered to marry the LATAM flight attendants aboard the  Airbus 321 en route to the northern beach city of Iquique, and they readily agreed. The head of the airline served as the witness. "He told me it's historic, that there has never before been a pope who married someone aboard a plane," Ciuffardi told journalists aboard the flight. Ciuffardi said the pope also told them: "This is the sacrament that is missing in the world, the sacrament of

Military spokesman Col. Roberto Itamar says 3,000 soldiers are involved in the operation that began Thursday morning. Military police are also participating, though authorities have not said how many. Local media estimate there are 400. Brazil’s military police do traditional policing and are not part of the army. Two Canadians and two Americans have been kidnapped in Nigeria, killing 2 police officers Kidnappers have abducted two Americans and two Canadians in the northern Nigerian state of Kaduna, killing two police officers, a police spokesman said on Wednesday. Kidnappings are rife in Nigeria, where domestic security is weak, though they overwhelmingly target other Nigerians. However, abductions of foreigners are not uncommon. The foreigners were ambushed by unknown gunmen on their way from the town of Kafanchan in Kaduna state to the capital Abuja, Mukhtar Aliyu, a spokesman for the Kaduna state police, said by telephone. Kafanchan is about 3-1/2 hours’ drive northeast of Abuja. “The two police escorts attached to them engaged the kidnappers in a fierce gun battle, which resulted in the unfortunate death of the two police officers,” Aliyu said. The United States embassy in Nigeria declined to comment. Global Affairs Canada is aware of the reports of the kidnapping

Next iOS Update to have an option to stop iPhone Processor throttling, Apple CEO promised Apple CEO Tim Cook has promised iPhone users that they’ll be able to disable the feature that throttles the performance of their handsets processors as the battery pack ages. While Cook doesn’t recommend iPhone users do so, he told Reporters  that the slowdown feature will have an option to turn it off in the next iOS update. “We’re gonna give people the visibility of the health of their battery so its very very transparent, this hasn’t been done before,” Apple’s chief said. “We will tell somebody we’re slightly reducing your performance by some amount in order to not have a sudden restart, and if you don’t want it you can turn it off.” However, he added a caveat: “We don’t recommend it, because we think people’s iPhones are really important to them and you never can tell when something is so urgent.” Apple has faced strong criticism and even court filings over its intenti

Yemen Government asks $1B grant from Saudi to save currency and prevent ‘famine’

Image
Yemen Government asks $1B grant from Saudi to save currency and prevent ‘famine’ Yemen's prime minister has called on the Saudi-led coalition allied with his government to deposit $1billion in the central bank to save the local currency from "complete collapse." In an emotional letter released Tuesday, Ahmed Abdu Daghir called on the coalition to act "now, not tomorrow," and said saving the rial means "saving Yemen is from inevitable famine." The rial, now trading at 500 to the dollar, has lost half its value since the coalition went to war against Yemen's  Houthi rebels in 2015. Food and fuel prices have soared, pushing many to the brink of famine. The U.N. has called Yemen the world's worst humanitarian crisis. www.semperdiamondlodge.com

Lawmakers in Philippine vote towards a federal system of government

Image
Lawmakers in Philippine vote towards a federal system of government Philippine lower house lawmakers voted on Tuesday to convene the chamber as a constitutional assembly, looking to amend the 30-year-old charter and shift to a system of federal government, allowing the president up to two terms in office. The switch to a federal system was one of the key planks of President Rodrigo Duterte’s election campaign, aimed to remedy what he saw as neglect by a Manila-centric political establishment that has left provinces in perpetual poverty. In a late afternoon session, Duterte’s allies, who dominate the nearly 300-member house, abruptly terminated debates and voted to convene an assembly to begin changing some constitutional provisions. Opposition lawmaker Edgar Erice protested against the speed of the decision, describing it as “railroading”. “They did not even allow a congressman to finish his interpellation and he was run over by the ‘Cha-Cha’ train,” he added. Prominent government member Diosdado Caballo tweeted that Mr Pérez had opened fire on police . Mr Pérez was wanted after he used a stolen helicopter to throw grenades at government buildings on 27 June. In footage posted on social media on Monday, Mr Perez said he had offered to turn himself in but that he believed authorities were initially trying to kill him rather than negotiate his surrender. FORMER SCHOOL FRIENDS OF KIM JONG-UN DESCRIBED WHAT HE WAS LIKE AS A BOY STATING HOW MUCH FUN THEY HAD... At school the dictator-to-be was called 'Pak Un' and described as the son of an employee at the North Korean embassy, Kim Jong-un ’s former classmates struggle to reconcile their memories of the “good friend” who was obsessed with basketball with the  North Korean  dictator.     According to friends he made while studying at a German-speaking public school near Bern, Switzerland, the head of the rogue state had a good sense of humour and an impressive collection of Nike trainers. He was a good friend,” Joao Micaelo, who now works as a chef at a restaurant in Bern. We had a lot of fun together. He was a good guy. Lots of kids liked him. I don’t know anything about his life today. All I know is the guy I knew in school. He loved basketball.  We played a lot together. I’d like to say to him, if you ever have the time, please contact me again so we can catch up.
