EU AND UK MAKE PROGRESS IN BREXIT NEGOTIATIONS
Brexit talks have made surprise
progress in this week's round of talks after Theresa May's Florence speech
created "a new dynamic" in negotiations, both sides have said.
Speaking at the end
of the latest round, EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier told reporters in
Brussels: “The Prime Minister’s speech in Florence has created a new dynamic in
our negotiations.
“On Monday I said
that we needed a moment of clarity: David [Davis] and I, as well as our teams,
worked well together. I want to thank both teams.
We
managed to create clarity on some points but on others, however, more work
remains to be done and we are not there yet.
“But we will keep
working in the constructive spirit until we’ve reach a deal on the essential
principles of the UK orderly withdrawal.”
Brexit Secretary
David Davis meanwhile said "decisive steps forward" had been made
"thanks to the constructive and determined way" both teams had
approached talks.
The shock
development comes despite the two sides apparently being publicly at
loggerheads when talks recommenced on Monday.
